Prayer for Austria
in Times of Political Change
"ER hört" - "HE
listens - HE has listened"

In the last one or
two years "Umkehr zum Herrn" ("Return to the Lord") has been
involved in various aspects of social and political activities to
support Christian values in an increasingly secular society. Far
reaching changes have taken place since the last government took
office less than 2 years ago. Over the summer the current
coalition of Social Democerats and the Austrian People's Party
has fallen apart, new elections are scheduled for September 28.
Strong liberal positions are now held even among many of the
politicians of the formerly conservative People's Party. The
planned law regarding homosexual unions (though not called
"marriages", no adoption rights) is just the tip of the iceberg.
Clearly time has
come to pray more eagerly for the developments in our nation.
Therfore our community supports a newly founded prayer initiative
for Austria. "HOPE for Europe" reports on its
website:
Although serious political and
social issues are facing the nation of Austria, our God is our
Rock and Redeemer. The Lord has revealed to us II Chronicles
7:14, "If my people who are called by my name will humble
themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their
wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their
sin, and heal their land."
A website with information about the issues, suggestions for
prayer, and guidelines for fasting has been established at:
www.erhoert.at.
In light of the upcoming emergency
national elections in Austria on Sunday, September 28, 2008, we
would like to invite you to join with others in the Body of
Christ for 40 days of Prayer and Fasting leading up to this
event.

Christians
Evangelize and Celebrate their Unity
Virtually
all Churches and Christian Groups joined together in June 2008
to make the most of a historic opportunity for evangelization.
And of course the community "Return to the Lord"
werealso involved, when hundreds of thousand people flocked
Vienna during
the soccer championship
of Euro 2008.
A report by Bruce Clewett, Kerygma Teams Austria.
“And
then he bowed his head and prayed with me: ‘Jesus, you are Lord
and I commit my life to you.’” Not necessarily an unusual
testimony, except for the fact that the man relating this story
was a Messianic Jew from Israel and the person praying with him
was a Muslim. Then there was the head of a Polish hooligan gang
who had come to the city to pick a fight. Instead, he ran into a
Slovakian Christian who asked him if he was interested in knowing
more about a personal relationship with Jesus. After a couple of
hours of talking with each other late at night on the streets of
Vienna, the Pole bowed his head and publically commited his life
to Jesus. Wai from mainland China had given her life to the Lord
2 years ago, but had eventually fallen away from God. She ran
into Theresa and Craig during a short visit to Vienna. After a
couple of ensuing talks over the next couple of days, Wai decided
to recommit her life to Christ. These are but a few of the many
testimonies of the participants in the 3 week “Christen Am Ball”
(Christians on the Ball) outreach which took place during the
Euro2008 European Football Championships from June 8th to June
29th in Vienna, Austria.
For the first time ever in
the history of the city, Christians from almost every church
background (Catholic, Lutheran, Messianic Jew, Pentecostal,
evangelical, etc. etc.) banded together to reach the residents
and guests in Vienna during a 3 week concerted evangelistic
outreach. Together with Craig Anderson from YWAM Austria, I was
involved in helping to recruit, organize and oversee the
approximately 300 Christians from 25 other nations who joined the
Viennese churches in this historic endeavor.

The evangelistic program
included a large “Peace Mile” (100 man tent and stage program
near the Viennese “Fan Mile” where tourists and football fans
could “chill out” and hear the Gospel), two large evangelistic
family festivals in a park near the soccer stadium, evangelistic
dramas and musical performances in some of the largest cathedrals
in the city and hundreds of conversations with people on the
street about God. The teams reported that hardly a day of the
outreach went by without someone praying with them on the walking
streets, in the churches, in the parks, and in other public
areas. The openness of the general public to the Gospel was
simply amazing.

The outreach concluded with
a 7 hour “Festival of Hope” on June 29th in St. Stephens
Cathedral. Cardinal Schönborn declared the church building on
this day to be a “House for all Christians” and cancelled all
other activities in the Church for the entire day. He also
allowed the inside of the ancient cathedral to be redecorated
with special lighting, a complex sound system and with two stages
for performing during this nationally televised spectacle. An
estimated 20,000 people attended all or part of the event.

For many, the highlight of
the Festival of Hope happened on the stage in the middle of the
church directly following a sermon from an Austrian Lutheran
pastor. Church leaders from all the mainline churches and
evangelical denominations walked up on the stage and formed a
circle. They then stretched out their hands towards the thousands
of people present and blessed them. As one participant put it:
“This event has changed our perception of the Church in our
country.”
For me personally it was
very rewarding to see breakthroughs among the Catholics,
Protestants and Messianic Jews in their relationships with people
from backgrounds different from their own. Most had never
attempted to evangelize alongside of people from other churches
like this. As one Protestant Swiss participant put it: “For me,
this working together of the various churches was a miracle… The
word “ecumenism” used to have such negative connotations for me…
Now, however, seeing on fire Christians from the various
confessions actually pulling together and moving ahead in the
same direction: this just bowled me over!!!”

Visionary
Leadership are those who see beyond the majority and lead.
Without a vision the people perish.
Having Hope and being positive
about the future isn’t easy in a negative, hostile, and cynical
world. We are confronted daily with many dooms day prophets with
bad news, through people we meet and through the media. We're
confronted with the decay of moral values and people giving up on
faith.Who are you listening too? Read more in the

1977 - 2007
"Return to the Lord" Celebrates its 30th Anniversary
30 Years ago - to be
exact on the 15th August, 1977 - "Umkehr zum Herrn" was
founded as a covenant community during a night of prayer
following a
prophetic call.
During those last three decades much has changed in the Christian
and secular world around us and in our own lives. In the last few
years
a generation of young Christians, partly coming form community
families, partly new converts, have started a new and dynamic
fellowship of their own under the name of Wilco ("Wilco" is the
short form of "will comply" the answer a pilot gives to the
instructions given by flight control). While the young people
have embraced tools for evangelism like "Alpha courses" and music
ministries, recently reaching out to places as far away as
Bosnia, the adult community "Umkehr zum Herrn" now includes 150
members and supports ministries such as community building, media
ministries and supports social and evangelistic outreaches in
addition to the regular community services such as children's
ministries, pastoral work and holding regular community meetings.

Common to all these activities
is the desire to work for the unity of all Christians and to bring the love
and salvation offered by Jesus Christ to the people around us. The command
of Jesus to be a "light to the world" and to be as visible as "a city set on
on hill" is just as valid for our community as it was 30 years ago when the
call was first heard by a group of Christians in Vienna to walk this path of
repentance and renewal together and to bring the Good News of God's changing
power to Christians and non-Christians alike.
We are still on our way. Follow
the navigation links of this web site to find out more of the history and
the current activities of "Umkehr zum Herrn".
On
the English website of this ecumenical community we would like to give our visitors a
brief overview
or our community, share some insights and let you participate in
the vision we feel the Lord has given us for our city Vienna, the
nation of Austria and beyond.
